Camera set up

How to put camera together:

Field Camera (Shenhao)-
1. put camera back on tripod
2. put lens on camera(remember there are two lens caps, so takes both off)
3. connect cable release to the lens.

4. set the camera to neutral making sure all movements are set to zero.

Monorail Camera (Sinar) -
1. attach a clamp to the collar of the camera and to the tripod
2. attach two film camera looking cannisters on the end of the clamp

3. add the lens, once again making sure to take the two lens caps off
4. put cable release on

5. set camera to neutral and tighten front and back to make sure the camera wont full.

On both cameras:
  • Lens plane(front) controls focus
  • Film plane(back) controls perspective
  • The images will be upside down and back to front
  • B = bulb: hold until you release the cable T= time: once to open shutter and once again to close the shutter.

When taking the photo:
  • Press the button on the side of the lens to preview, making sure you are set at F506, to set the photo up correctly. And make sure you shut the preview button before taking the dark slide out
  • Use a focusing loop to focus your photo on the ground glass
  • Changing the aperture means more exposure time
  • Don't sharpen anymore than you need too
  • Focus on the horizon, not everything will be able to be in focus. Visual Hiarachy - what you focus on is the most important part of the photo
  • Take 3 different light meter readings; at the shadow, highlights and mid-grey.
