Digital Enalrger and c type prints

We used the digital enlarger to create c - types, this is a print that has been exposed using digital technology. With a c - type, also known as chromagenic print, it is controlled by a computer as is exposed using lasers rather than a bulb. 

 How to use the digital enlarger:


  1. Start up the EXPOSER and the INDEX programs. These are what you use the print your photos. The INDEX is where you add your photos and edit them. 
  2. To add photos to the index insert your memory stick to the hard drive. Click load, click on selected picture at the left of the screen, and select the photos you want to print. Thumbnails of your photos will appear in the INDEX.
  3. You can alter the colour, saturation, brightness and contrast of the photos once it is loaded into the INDEX. Right click on the photo you want to edit. A colour correction window will appear. Move the sliders to your desired edit. Then click apply. The name of the photo will now be green. 
  4. To select the size of the print go to EXPOSER, click the stop button to turn the autoscan feature off. Then click the size of the image you want to print. In my case it was 10x8. Click on auto to turn autoscan feature back on.
  5. Select one or more photos to print by left clicking on the name of the photo so it turns red. Make sure the autoscan is turned back on in the EXPOSER window, the orange stop sign should be displayed. Click the print button and then a preview of the first photo will be shown in the EXPOSER window.
  6. Switch off the monitor, using the monitor switch on the control box, and turn on the focus switch.
  7. Use the handles below the enlarger to get your photo the correct size, you do this by turning them to either make the enlarger higher or lower.
  8. Use a focus finder to focus the photo, instead of seeing film grain, you will see sharp squares of light when the photo is in focus.
  9. Turn the focus light switch off.
  10. Get your paper out, making sure there is no light from anywhere are the paper is light sensitive. Line your paper up under the easel and press start on the control panel, it will tick and then beep once completed.
  11. Put the paper in the colour processor.
  12. If you have selected more the one photo the next will automatically be the next photo. Just insert your paper and press start again.

I really like how the c-type looks, and the also prefer the process of this to inkjet, as I feel resizing on photoshop if hit and miss, but once you size the easel on the enlarger it will stay the same size until you change it again.
